The MSc Professional Leadership part time programme enables graduate professionals in all sectors to enhance their continued professional development and lifelong learning through the negotiation of learning contracts, specifically developed work based learning initiatives and post graduate level academic study.

The MSc Professional Leadership programme is designed for individuals whose current role is to innovate, either in public, social or private enterprise on a major or minor scale. It will open up opportunities for personal and professional development. 

Structured over three phases, the programme will encourage you to evaluate methodologies and apply critical thinking, to theoretical and work-based projects, giving you the opportunity to develop your professional practice.

The personalised nature of the MSc Professional Leadership programme will ensure that the modules are tailored to reflect your individual needs – enabling you to progress in your current role, or in a new career.

This programme will particularly suit individuals or groups who do not have a masters qualifications but who have either a degree or senior management experience in the workplace and now wish to formalise this through the achievement of an academic award to assist with career progression. 

It would also suit those who are changing career and seek further study to support that career progression within the academic community whilst working.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally be 18 years of age* on registration and one of the following (or international equivalents):

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) at 2:2 or above, (or an equivalent qualification from a recognised UK or overseas institution), third class and “pass” degrees are not acceptable
  • Applicants who have already studied at a level equivalent to a UK Master's programme will be assessed primarily on the basis of achievement at this level

In addition to the above an applicant must be employed or be undertaking voluntary work.

If English is not your first language you will be required to provide proof of fluency prior to the start of the course, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent qualification. We accept:

  • IELTS - minimum overall score of 6.0
  • Pearson’s PTE Academic – 51
  • GSM London’s English Proficiency test – 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT – 76-77

Non-standard entry:

If you do not meet the standard entry requirements, listed above, exceptionally you may be able to be considered via our non-standard entry process.

Applications from candidates who lack the normal course entry requirements are positively encouraged. In such cases, the Admissions Tutors must be satisfied that the applicant has the necessary potential, knowledge or experience and motivation to follow the course successfully.

To be considered you will need to be able to demonstrate/pass:

  • Evidence of full-time work experience (minimum three years managerial experience)
  • An employer reference
  • Interview
  • Academic interview (if required)
  • Written essay (if required)

Whilst advanced standing will only normally be granted for qualifications achieved during the last five years, for work based learning we request consideration of advanced standing over the period of the student’s career.

Candidates who apply via non-standard entry are considered on individual merits.

Accreditation of prior learning:

Partial exemptions from a postgraduate programme may be obtained in accordance with the Academic Regulations dependent on the compatibility of previous study. Each case is considered on its own merit and will be, subject to the approval by University of Plymouth.

You may be required to provide an academic reference and/or personal statement.

We will not normally consider APL’s older than 3 years unless the applicant has a recent experiential learning.



The typical tuition fee for this course is £3,000 to £4,500 per year, depending on whether you complete 60 or 90 credits, respectively.

A postgraduate masters degree is 180 credits and can take up to 3 years to complete. If you hold prior qualifications these may exempt you from parts of the course (see Entry Requirements) your tuition fees may vary,  the price per credit is £50.00.  Prior exemptions will be considered on an individual basis.

This course will cost a maximum of £9,000.
