Mature graduate launched revolutionary folding bicycle brand on Kickstarter

21/11/2017

Stuart Lambert is a graduate with an Executive MBA (EMBA) at London-based business degree provider GSM London. He is also the founder and managing director of Crosshead – the compact folding bicycle company based in Kent.

The inspiration for his folding bicycle came in 2007 after he was dissatisfied with the quality of a bicycle he had bought while on holiday in Bruges, Belgium. He came back to the UK convinced that he could do better.

“Like so many designers and engineers before me I believed I could improve things and create a road bike which folded, rather than a commuter-focused design (where the compact size is the priority over the ride),” said Stuart.

He decided to commit to the project in 2009, some months after enrolling on an Executive MBA programme at GSM London.

Stuart graduated in 2011 and has spent much of his time since then developing his company and his bicycle brand. Studying at GSM London gave him time to work through some of his business frustrations by focusing on what he believed in and how he should progress his career as a designer and business person. It also helped him to adopt a new kind business confidence. Stuart launched his Kickstarter campaign on Thursday 31 August 2017 with the aim of raising £90,000 by 29th September 2017. The aim is to start production quickly on a full-size folding bike and move into the wider commercial supply to dealers. The project follows eight years of refinement, including the development of unique, patented double-folding technology. Other features of the Crosshead bicycle include its ability to offer:

  • 10 and 20 gear options
  • Double-folding technology called Z-gate, which allows for quick folding with all catches integrated neatly within the aerofoil tube sections
  • Two hinges that allow the wheel to fold towards each other, ending up side by side in a Z formation.
  • Made in Britain.
