GSM London joins the Startup Europe Comes to the Universities (SEC2U) initiative, organised by the Startup Europe University Network (SEUN) and supported by the European Commission (Startup Europe). SEC2U is an initiative to showcase the commitment of European universities to create a strong culture of entrepreneurship and innovation within the academic community.
To strengthen the connections between the various actors in the university entrepreneurial ecosystems, the SEC2U will organise simultaneous events in different universities all across Europe during the week of 23rd to 29th of October.
During the GSM London event, which will take place in Greenford campus on the 24th of October and Greenwich campus on the 25th of October, the entrepreneurs will be able to familiarise themselves with the opportunities and support available for growing their businesses. In addition, some success stories and cases of failure as a way of learning will be presented as well as some networking time among the participants.
Through this cooperation, led by the GSM London Careers Service and Formation Zone business incubator, a new step towards internationalisation is being taken together with many other prestigious universities which are already part of the SEC2U initiative.
The major theme of the GSM London SEC2U event is:
‘From Start-up to Scale-up: Helping New Business to Accelerate’
The event will draw upon the research and insights of a key practitioner in the successful scaling-up of enterprises and will include practical cases of entrepreneurs who have been through a recent scale-up programme in conjunction with the Formation Zone at GSM London.
The event will be attended by GSM London enterprising students and alumni, local entrepreneurs, private and public business service providers and support agencies, business associations and representative organisations, local authorities, and institutions of further and higher education.
The event includes:
- Insights from the work of a European scale-up specialist
- Inputs from entrepreneurs on key issues involved in business growth and scale-up
- Perspectives of support organisations involved in incubation and acceleration programmes
- Policies and initiatives required to enhance opportunities for successful start-up and scale-up, including the role of HEIs
- Opportunity for networking and building B2B connections
Organisations who have confirmed their support for the event include West London Business and South East London Chamber of Commerce.

About Startup Europe Comes to the Universities (SEC2U)
Startup Europe Comes to the Universities (SEC2U) is in a Europe wide initiative where we will engage many European Universities and enable them to exhibit their effort with spreading entrepreneurial culture. SEC2U initiative will happen during the week of 23rd to 29th of October 2017.
The main objective of the SEC2U events is to showcase the commitment of European universities to create a strong culture of entrepreneurship and innovation that is spreading in the university community. And as result transferring it to the society by creating startups and spinoffs with high added value, based on knowledge and technological development.
GSM London (formerly the Greenwich School of Management) is a distinctive higher education provider that has been delivering degree-level education for over 40 years. We have campuses in Greenwich and Greenford and a study centre at London Bridge. Our partnership with Plymouth University means that our students receive a final qualification/degree awarded by one of the UK’s top modern universities. We currently have around 7,000 students studying for a range of business-related degrees
The College differentiates itself from other providers in higher education by embracing the opportunities of diversity and inclusion. About 80%of our students live within 10 miles of their campus, 90% are Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME), 80% are mature and 16.6% are drawn from POLAR 1 and 2 postcodes (the largest percentage of any higher education institution in London).
To meet the educational needs of this unusual, dynamic and entrepreneurial student base, we are pioneering strengths-based learning in the UK, in which we build on the life and work experiences of our students. We are also a pioneer in accelerated learning, having long offered students the opportunity to complete full degree programmes in two years of intensive study, rather than over three years with long breaks, as is the case in most universities. These accelerated programmes offer real benefit to students looking to get into the world of work as quickly as possible, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds who don’t have the luxury of dropping out of the workforce for longer than necessary.
