Dale is a Business Management (accelerated 2-year degree) graduate from GSM London, and director of Godfrey Tradings ltd – a surfboard import company. Dale was running this business when he decided he needed to study a degree at GSM London to take it further.

The Inspiration 

Dale is an avid surfer and traveller, who decided to combine his passions with business. During a trip to Jeffreys Bay, South Africa in 2010, Dale came across a brand – Rebel – and after riding the first wave on this board he knew it was a unique offering that the surfing community would love. Through a local surfing buddy, Dale approached the shaper of this board to take the brand into the UK.


The Business 

Once returning to the UK after my trip, I picked up the conversation with the shaper and his factory and quickly started my company importing the boards into the UK. Shortly after establishing Rebel in the UK, I branched out into Australia. This is when I realised that I needed the degree knowledge, as well as an understanding of the market, to help me progress my business.

How studying at GSM London helped the business 

The two-year Business Management degree at GSM London was ideal for me to accelerate my business and graduate quicker than at other universities. I've always been business minded but GSM London gave me the academic knowledge in a practical context – which had a great impact on my company.

The logistics and operations module highlighted that in holding stock I was creating unnecessary work for myself at extra expense. These learnings, combined with a marketing project which involved analysing my business competition and the industry, transformed my business model from costly bulk orders delivered to myself for redistribution to clients, to custom orders delivered from factory directly to the consumer.
