Grants and allowances

Along with tuition fee loans and maintenance loans, the Student Loans Company offers other funding options. The difference is that while you have to repay the loans, the grants and allowances you don't have to pay back. For example, if you have children, care for an adult, or have a disability you could be eligible for one or more of these:

  • Childcare Grant:This means-tested grant is designed to help parents cover childcare costs while they're studying.

  • Parents' Learning Allowance: Worth up to £1,573 a year, the Parents' Learning Allowance helps with education-related costs like books and travel.

  • Adult Dependents' Grant: If you have an adult dependent this grant can be worth up to £2,757.

  • Disabled Students' Allowances: If you have a disability as defined by the 2010 Equality Act, you can apply for support while you study. The amount you receive depends on your disability.
