What’s your vibe?
The atmosphere of a workplace can change enormously from one company to the next, and for every stress-filled hothouse there’s a calm and forward-thinking office. However, when it comes down to careers, a certain level of stress or relaxation is to be expected, regardless of the business you work in.
Working as a healthcare provider, stock broker or economist will almost certainly require you to work long, often unsociable hours in a pressured environment. If, on the other hand, you want to take photographs, work in the great outdoors, or work in a scientific sector, your working days will be far calmer. The choice is a personal one – certain workplaces will get the best out of different types of people.
Able to progress?
Many workers like constant movement when it comes to working in an organisation, progressing up the ladder and experiencing a wide variety of roles within a business. The pace of progression, the thrill of taking on more responsibility and the obvious salary increases are all great reasons to progress.
Conversely though, there’s something to be said for staying in a role for an indefinite period of time. Stability, familiarity, and being able to completely immerse yourself in the work, becoming an absolute expert in the field in the process, is what many people strive for in their careers. Such an attitude does allow a person to pursue other things aside from work, of course.
What’s your balance?
Many, especially those with children, aren’t looking for an occupation that leeches the majority of their time, and perks such as flexible hours, a parent-centric approach to operations, telecommuting opportunities and a hearty amount of paid holiday can really make a career seem worth the effort.
For younger people, go-getters and business sharks, these kinds of benefits pale in comparison to high salaries and all of the exciting opportunities that come alongside working in a more high-powered workplace. Trading off flexibility and casualness for cash is understandable, but it’s not for everyone.
