Hilary is a mature student currently studying the BSc (Hons) Events Management degree. As an unfortunate victim of redundancy, she turned to further education to create a better, more stable life for herself. Today we hear from her what it is like to re-train as an adult and how GSM London has supported her in returning to education and given her new opportunities.
Recovering from redundancy
“After I was made redundant from my job in the city, I was unsure what to do next. When the Opportunities Network suggested that I return to education, I thought it would be a great way to re-train and build on my experience.
“I chose the BSc (Hons) Events Management degree because I had planned a lot of business functions in my previous role as a PA and really liked the organisational side of it. The course has helped me to develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to work with organisations and co-ordinate events. When I graduate I’d like to start up my own firm or join a large organisation.”
Getting the support needed to achieve
“GSM London is an extremely supportive environment to study in, because it’s a small institution. This means that I’ve been able to build good relationships with both my tutors and the other students on my course.
“My biggest achievement so far is that I have averaged a distinction across all my work. I’ve worked long and hard to gain good grades, but it has given me a lot of confidence – especially as I have achieved this in modules like accountancy that I hadn’t any previous experience in.”
Advice for others
“What’s the advice I’d give to someone considering higher education? I’m 50 this year and if I can do it, anyone can!”
