We want to make higher education accessible and achievable for all — but not everyone is ready to jump straight into degree level study. So we offer extended degree programmes featuring an integrated Foundation Year to give you the skills, knowledge and confidence you’ll need for your degree course studies. Our Foundation Year route integrates Level 3 study – equivalent to A Levels, BTECs and access courses – with a university degree, so you can study it all in one place.
Who is the Foundation Year for?
If you’re returning to study to improve your job prospects, coming back to learning after several years’ work or child-raising, haven’t formally completed your education, or don’t have any experience of academic study but hold work experience, then the Foundation Year is for you.
How does it help?
The Foundation Year programme helps prepare you for higher-level study in a number of ways:
- Develop your core skills You’ll focus on developing your numeracy, computer skills and English: the core skills that you’ll need to succeed on your degree course. Once these skills are in good shape, the rest can fall into place.
- Try different subjects You’ll also get to choose two elective modules, giving you insight into two different degree-course subject areas. It’s a great chance to find out what really interests you before committing to a particular degree.
- Build your confidence If you feel out of your depth with your studies, you can become disheartened and frustrated — and that’s the last thing we want. The Foundation Year helps prevent this happening by making you a capable, independent learner, confident in your own abilities.
- Discover your strengths As a key part of your learning journey, we’ll help you identify your natural strengths and you’ll be assigned a personal tutor who will help you apply these strengths throughout your studies.
Where will it take you?
The integrated Foundation Year is not an access programme: it automatically registers you onto your chosen degree programme, once you have successfully completed all modules. You can then move to the next level of your Bachelor’s degree.
