2016 was another great year for e-commerce with online sales sitting at £60.4 billion just before Christmas – a 14.9% rise on 2015.

Every business is now a digitally mediated business on a potentially global stage, with innovations such as consumerisation, mobile, big data and social media cutting across sector and functional boundaries. B2C e-commerce companies such as Just Eat are focusing on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) by means to influence the future of food delivery. Also transportation network companies such as Uber are investing heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic driverless cars in an ambitious experiment to totally disrupt workforce patterns and drive a “gig” B2B e-commerce economy.

E-Commerce is not just transforming organisations; it creates new business models, products and services, generating new revenue streams and delivering a unique customer experience.

Here are 3 reasons why I would recommend to study and pursue a career on E-Commerce management:

  1. E-Commerce has a fantastic long-term global growth outlook

An independent study conducted by The Centre for Retail Research in 2016 has found that E-Commerce is still the fastest growing retail market in Europe and North America. Online sales in Western Europe and Poland grew from £174.76 bn [€201.33 bn] in 2015 to £201.90 bn [€232.60 bn] in 2016 (+15.6%). In 2017, the organisation expects total e-commerce online sales to increase to £230.62 bn [€265.68 bn], a rise of 14.2%. Further growth of 13.8% in 2018 should mean that online sales reach £262.46 bn [€302.37 bn].

 

  1. E-Commerce teaches individual to think like a General Manager

Electronic commerce is more than ordering goods from an on-line catalogue. It involves all aspects of an organization’s electronic interactions with product marketing, supply chain, pricing and profit management, customer service and much more. Many jobs only expose you to one area of the organisation, but never the whole enterprise at work. E-Commerce is breaking that barrier.
